I thought my heart was going to lurch through my chest… But I gave the pedal one more push… Then another… And another until I reached the top of the hill.

It was only about 20 meters… And in that moment I was convinced I could’ve walked it quicker… But today I was pushing myself to cycle to…

…The stop street!

Yes, friends, that was sadly my goal!

But a few stop streets later, and I had tackled 10km’s… I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to walk again… But I’d done it!

And as I’m thinking and sharing about that experience now, I’m amazed by how many business lessons I was blessed with!

Here are the 4 biggest business lessons…

1. It’s not a competition.

Many cyclists would probably snort at the ridiculousness of the fact that a little 10km ride could have that kind of impact on me… But for this super unfit bunny… It was a big thing… A momentous step!

Same thing happens in business… I sometimes catch myself in a spell of business or blog envy – feeling like my steps are insignificant in comparison to someone else’s achievement!

As a creativepreneur… We need to remember that we have something awesome to offer the world… And that we are running our own race!

Which reminds me…

2. Take the step

By taking the opportunity to do something different… I know that my life is richer (even if it’s only because of the new stories I’m amassing)!

Also in business… Taking on opportunities that are different to what you are comfortable with, stretches you beyond staleness… Keeps you moving forward… and sometimes those new opportunities can shift your business entirely.

3. Find balance

The reason I jumped on the bike in the first place… Was because I’ve been working too hard lately… I needed to find a little balance, and spend some quality time with my boys.

At first, I felt a little guilty to be sneaking out of the “office” before 6… but the space and time really did do me the world of good… Some fresh air in my system, blood circulating through the veins… I really needed it!

As entrepreneurs… Too often we neglect ourselves at the expense of this baby we are creating! Exercise, sleep, nourishment are all essential to keep ourselves effective!

4. Perseverance

Something I have recently battled… Is perseverance.

When we push hard at our business for extended periods of time… Burnout is usually close by.

Prior to deciding to create Dream & Do… I already had a rather full plate, and had been working on and at my business for two years without any significant breaks (except for that time when we went camping without Internet)!

With too many late nights, and early mornings under my belt… Fatigue was weighing heavily on my shoulders!

Unlike most sane people who then schedule a period of rest and reflection… No, no, no… I get a bee in my bonnet… And I decide “it’s time”… Time to help all those entrepreneurs who are really battling to find their way in this entrepreneurial world.

And how do I help them… Did I whip up a little short course on strategy / branding perhaps? Oh hell no… Not me! I take on a massive 10 module course that has about 4 lessons in each module… That’s 40 videos I need to make of myself… With added playsheets, checklists and bonuses!

Ok, why am I telling you all of this?

Because, a few modules in… Fatigue and burnout start creeping in… Along with a bit of self doubt “why the hell am I doing this again?

And I had to take a moment, remember why I was doing what I was doing… Focus on the smaller goals… Put one foot in front of the other, and take small steps towards the dream… Small manageable steps.

Entrepreneurship is not all mojitos on white sandy beaches… It involves a little blood, sweat and tears… But when we persist… We keep at it… And we create something awesome!

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”
